For years, meditation has been used for its beneficial effects. Adding meditation as part of our daily activities can contribute positively to our lives. However, since meditation is a process, some steps should be followed.
- Sit with both legs crossed. Although meditation involves numerous positions, the most popular of them is the cross-legged position or lotus position. This position requires the spine to be straight and upright, which means that slouching is strictly prohibited. When the spine is positioned correctly, the energy in the body will circulate properly.
- Sitting position. In the New Thought of teaching, a meditator can sit on a chair with no footwear. Meanwhile, meditators in Orthodox Christianity can sit on a stool. Meditators do it by walking in Theravada Buddhism. Walking meditation is called ‘bas-relief in Sukhothai, Thailand. Sitting up straight with the spine perfectly vertical and the thighs parallel to the floor is the position of a meditator. Also, the hands should rest on the top chair’s arm or the knees.
- Kneeling position. The knees are on the floor with the buttocks sitting on the sole of the feet. Both hands should be positioned on the lap.
- Lying down position. More commonly known as the ‘corpse position’ or ‘savasna’ in Yoga. This is done by lying down on a carpet. Although this position is not used that much because of its similarity with the sleeping position — which sometimes results in actual sleeping. Its principal function is to relieve stress and not so much of meditation per se
- Performing hand gestures. These hand gestures, also called ‘mudras’, have theological meanings. According to Yogic philosophy, the motions can significantly affect consciousness. An example of this would be the typical hand gesture from the Buddhist tradition. One hand is placed on top of the other with both tips pf the thumbs in contact.
- Activities in repetition. Humming, chanting, or breathing are some of the activities that can help boost inner calmness. Others like the Soto Zen meditators practice in front of a wall with their eyes open. However, most meditation schools have an assumption that their eyes are somewhat opened halfway or entirely shut off.
The number of hours and frequency difference as well. Some nuns and monks have pledged to meditate for the rest of their lives. The average accepted period is roughly around 20 or 30 minutes long; however, this may increase as you grow more profound with meditation as stated by meditators themselves. You will experience the benefits of meditation with proper guidance from your meditation instructor. Frustrations may occur when you find it hard to meditate daily. Often, meditators get irritated with long hours of kneeling or sitting down.
Always put in mind that success can only be achieved with perseverance and drive. Always bring with you these two qualities to keep you focused all the time.
